Every year we ask each other what our resolutions are and wish each other luck in achieving those goals. However noble those goals may be – to lose weight, get out of debt, quit smoking, etc. – our tendency is to set the goals and promptly forget about them by February. As 2012 approaches, it brings with it New Year’s resolutions and promises by many to live a healthier lifestyle, including quitting smoking.

Different surveys set the failure rate at anywhere between 75 and 90 percent for New Year’s resolutions. On the whole, we are not good about setting achievable goals, backing them up with a plan and sticking to it.  Anyone attempting to give up smoking should set a starting date and make it public, so that you can’t back out.

Before the end of each year most of us will try to work out what we need to improve or change in our lives and come up with our new years resolution. Some want to stop smoking, drink less, spend less money on online casino games, exercise more or have a healthier diet. No matter what your motive is, it’s a good way to end the year and start the new year fresh. Celebrities also have the best of intentions for the new year and many have shared their new years resolutions with their fans.

Pop diva Rihanna has told friends her New Year’s resolutions are to quit smoking, make more cash — and find a new man. Despite spending New Year’s Eve at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ celebrity party in Miami wearing a see-through dress that flashed her nipple ring, she ended up kissing a female friend.

She later tweeted , “Fyi, we gotta find me somebody to kiss @ midnight by next NYE!!!! Melissa didn’t cut it for me lastnt.” The 23-year-old singer also thinks there is no better time to quit smoking after finishing her grueling world tour.

A source told The Sun, “She thinks it’s a good time to do it as she has some down time. She’ll be able to dedicate even more time to working out as she’s worried she’ll pile on weight once she stops.”

Quitting smoking can be one of the most difficult habits to break, but it’s important not to become discouraged and learn from past failures to stop. It takes them anywhere between six and ten attempts to quit, so some people already know what works for them and what doesn’t. So people might need to go back and refine that plan a little, but certainly it’s a way for them to continue moving forward to a healthier lifestyle.

It’s hard to make a lifestyle change and stick to it on your own.  Surround yourself with a support system of people with the same goal or people who want to see you succeed unconditionally. If you feel like you fail year after year to keep your resolution, you’re not alone! It’s not easy making a lifestyle change, especially breaking life-long habits like smoking.

It is important to consult a doctor about possible medications to alleviate the effects of quitting, and to establish a strong support group in your effort. A combination of quit aids and counseling will often be a better and easier method of quitting than attempting to quit cold turkey.
